Campaign Story

We need your help to build an outdoor Community Classroom and Events Center so we can host groups and share music again!

Our Story
Boise Music Lessons is a family owned music studio that empowers adults, teens, and tweens to play together, regardless of their musical backgrounds, through multi-instrumental, song-based learning. We empower people to play music with others by removing the fear, stigma, and preconceived notions surrounding learning an instrument.

While in high school, we (Angie and Marcus) started teaching music lessons to our respective neighbor kids. After heading off to college, we taught in the practice rooms at Boise State, then out of our first shared apartment/band jam space. We were excited to purchase our home on the Boise Bench in 2009 and finally start creating a dedicated studio space for teaching music.
Throughout our “early years” of teaching, day-jobs, college, and bands, we began hosting casual gatherings, affectionately dubbed “hootenannies,” where we would invite friends over and play music. We noticed that while only a few friends had musical backgrounds, almost everyone wanted to play but were too afraid to pick up an instrument. We’d encourage them to try and would show them some easy ways to participate. Our friendly hootenannies grew over the years and turned into beloved seasonal events.
Community at the Heart
When we decided to officially start Boise Music Lessons in January of 2016, we knew that we needed to include a group element like our hootenannies to teach people how to apply their learning and actually play with other people. It was challenging at first to convince people to start off playing with a group as no one ever feels “ready.” However, once we learned how to break down songs so they could be played at any stage of the learning process, we found our core audience willing to dive in and trust the process.

After launching Boise Music Lessons, we installed a shared instrument wall so students could explore different options to see what they liked playing. We've continued to add instruments to this resource over the years. Promoting exploration shifted the focus of our studio to a multi-instrumental approach, and we now provide a song-based curriculum with parts for nearly a dozen different instruments. While some students like to specialize, most prefer to dabble and pick up 2-3 instruments over a few years of lessons.
During our five years in business, we prioritized renovating our home to create a comfortable studio. We converted our living room into a lesson/class space and a bedroom into the "drum room" full of percussion instruments. We added a student restroom and installed wood flooring throughout the studio, and painted the walls warm, inviting colors. We also invested in armless, modular furniture to accommodate groups playing various instruments.

What Inspired the Outdoor Classroom
When the pandemic hit, we immediately focused on making sure our students had a safe way to continue to play music. We invested in a computer, webcam, and high-resolution microphone to host Zoom lessons, and we launched a “Virtual Sip & Strum'' class series with proceeds supporting local nonprofits. Once re-opening phases allowed, we started meeting outdoors for one-on-one lessons and at parks for group hootenannies throughout the summer and fall. Our efforts and continual adaptations were noticed by Good Morning America and we were featured in their Small Business Spotlight as a business pivoting in the face of the pandemic.
With the cold weather approaching, we started looking for options to host lessons in the winter months. We purchased a small greenhouse to serve as a heated student pod to gauge interest in this type of instruction. The response was overwhelmingly positive, so we spent our winter break renovating our garage, converting it into an open-air studio as a permanent location for one-on-one lessons. We outfitted the studio with heaters, an air purifier, and new instruments that will withstand temperature fluctuations.
A New Community Space
We still need one thing to fulfill our mission of creating a safe, vibrant studio: a dedicated space to host group classes. With your help we can finally realize our dream of transforming our backyard into a musical oasis, centered around a covered outdoor classroom for hootenannies, events, campfire jams, and more! We received a grant through the City of Boise to purchase a 14’x20’ shelter and were issued the appropriate building permits. To begin construction in June, we need to raise funds for the remainder of this project. We are seeking a contractor to remove existing concrete, level the earth, pour a foundation, and build the structure. Additionally, we are partnering with Niky Dryden of SplitPea Edible Landscaping to install pathways and provide a native plant habitat to create a safe and inviting space for budding musicians and pollinators alike!

With your support, Boise Music Lessons will be able to create an inviting, warm, and versatile space that will live on past the pandemic to become a dynamic venue to gather and share music and experiences with our community.
About the Founders
Angie and Marcus Marianthi have been partners in life, music, and business since 2005. After meeting in high school, the pair reconnected in college through their shared love of music (read: both of them had a MySpace profile for their bands!). Settling in Boise in 2006, Angie and Marcus taught music lessons and played in bands while attending Boise State. As they worked to accumulate their collection of degrees (Music, English, Communication, Education, Health Science and more!) they discovered their true calling: to teach people to play music for fun as a way to cultivate community. In addition to Boise Music Lessons, they share two kiddos (ages 7 & 2) and a rather judgemental cat (age 14). When not playing music together, the Marianthi family enjoys riding bikes and sharing local food and drink.

Campaign Updates

  • 21-04-2021

    Wow! 8K in 24 hours??

Thank you all for your incredible contributions in the first 24 hours of our campaign to raise the roof on the Boise Music Lessons Community Classroom! We are truly overwhelmed by your love and support. To hit 41% of our overall goal the first day of fundraising is simply unbelievable, and we can’t thank you all enough. We are just itchin’ to get started on construction!

You might notice, we added some new rewards today. Since the classroom naming rights were snached up within the first hours of launching (a HUGE thank you to Stacey, Annie, and Mattie Iris Knierim!) we’re now offering the option to name the Jampitheater (fire pit circle) or the Pollinator Garden. We can’t wait to see how these spaces will be commemorated!

Please keep spreading the word about the Community Classroom to your friends who want to make some music or support a community project!

    ❤️ Angie & Marcus

    $12k in one week!?

Thanks to your generous contributions and enthusiastic shares, we’re already over halfway to our funding goal to build the Boise Music Lessons Community Classroom. We can’t wait to begin construction on this dynamic musical space next month!

Truly, thank you, friends. There’s no way we’d be able to make this vision of an outdoor jam-topia a reality without all your support.  Please keep spreading the word so we can raise the roof!

  • 04-05-2021

    Groundbreaking!

Today marks two weeks since the start of our campaign to raise the roof on the Boise Music Lessons Community Classroom. Thanks to your shares and contributions we’re already 72% to our goal and are breaking ground TODAY!

That’s right, today we begin tearing out concrete, relocating trees, and leveling the ground to transform this space into a magnificent jamtopia! Check out the video below to see the “before” and stay tuned for the “after” coming late summer/early fall.

Please help us continue this transformation and reach 100% of our goal by spreading the word about the Community Classroom (link in bio) to your friends, family, and favorite businesses who want to make some music or support an awesome community project!

    The home stretch!

We’ve spent this past week hard at work to prepare for this space for jammin’! Now we have a clean slate to start building our Community Classroom, Jamphitheater, and courtyard Pollinator Garden!

Quick campaign update: we’re at 77% of our goal as we enter the final week of fundraising. The naming rights to the Community Classroom and Jamphitheater have been claimed, and we can’t wait to see what these lucky owners will decide to call them. The Pollinator Garden naming rights are the last remaining, so if you’ve wanted to make your mark on the community, now is the time to snag this exclusive campaign reward!

Lastly, we had the pleasure of chatting with Zions Bank. If you’d like to check out our Small Business Success Story feature, you can find it here: https://www.zionsbank.com/community/articles/2021/april/small-business-success-story-boise-music-lessons/

Thanks so much for all your support! Please help us keep spreading the word about the Community Classroom to your friends, family, or favorite businesses who want to make some music or support an awesome community project!

    Only 5% left to go!

This week was a big one for the Boise Music Lessons Community Classroom — Split Pea Edible Landscaping installed the classroom pathway and courtyard! They also planted the pollinator garden and built a trellis to make the space cozy and inviting. Now we’re one step closer to creating an outdoor oasis for group classes, Hootenannies, employee retreats, team building events, Sip & Strums, shindigs, and other shenanigans!

Speaking of the pollinator garden, it was adopted this week! This gave us a much-appreciated boost and we now only have 5% to go to to reach our goal! Please help us close this gap before the end of the campaign on Sunday by sharing this page with your favorite musical enthusiasts. And if you haven’t already, snag your reward above!

    We did it!!

Wow!  We can’t believe it — we’ve reached our fundraising goal to raise the roof on the Boise Music Lessons Community Classroom!

Thank you SO much to everyone who contributed and shared our campaign — because of your generosity this vision is well on its way to becoming a reality.  We can’t wait to host your jam session in this musical outdoor oasis!

If you were waiting to grab some swag or snag a class pass, don’t fret (pun intended) — the campaign page is open for shopping until Sunday at 11:59 PM.  All additional funds will go towards phase 2 of classroom construction: we would like to purchase a wall kit and siding to enclose the back half of the gazebo.  The added insulation will make it more weather-friendly and help keep our neighbors happy!

Thank you again for all your support, both this past month and throughout the last 5+ years of building this incredible musical community.  We are grateful for each and every one of you!

    Much love and gratitude,

    Angie & Marcus

We reached 108% of our goal!

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!
⁣We are overwhelmed, delighted, and humbled by your support in helping us build the Boise Music Lessons Community Classroom.  Because of your generosity we reached our initial goal to raise the roof on the classroom, AND the stretch goal to add siding to the back! 🥳

Every single donation, share, and kind word is truly appreciated. Thanks to these contributions from our magnificent community, we will soon have a safe outdoor class and event space, nestled in the heart of a native plant garden. We can’t wait to welcome you into the space and make music together!

We are going to toast our community, take a power nap, and then get to work making you proud! Thanks again for cheering us along throughout this journey — we’ll be sure to keep you posted with all the building progress!

    💚 Angie and Marcus

    We raised the roof!

Last week we gathered at a local park for our final group class of the spring season. It coincidentally happened to fall upon the same day we raised the roof on the outdoor Community Classroom! What a great way to close out a season of sharing music!

This summer we’re shifting our focus to finishing this outdoor classroom space so we can be ready to welcome everyone back in August. Currently, Marcus is hard at work digging out the jamphitheater where we’ll host gatherings around the campfire.

Thanks for all your support helping us turn our vision of an outdoor musical oasis into a reality!

    Planting trees & making music!

Happy summer! We’ve been hard at work prepping the new outdoor teaching space, sending out crowdfunding campaign rewards, and teaching the summer mini-season (an option for those enrolled in a Lesson Membership). Best of all, the local ice cream shop, The STIL, finally opened up across the street so we’re enjoying some sweet treats and staying cool in this heat. We hope you’re having a wonderful summer, too!

SplitPea Edible Landscaping came by last week and worked some green magic in our outdoor space. They transformed the jamphitheater by surrounding it in native trees and plants, and creating cozy berms with a soft cedar mulch (and you know Marcus loves mulch!). Lastly, they added a Moonglow Juniper as a centerpiece in the Juniper Sparks Pollinator Garden — how fitting!
One last thing before we sign off — if you are a crowdfunding campaign donor who selected a commemorative stone to be placed in the campfire circle, be sure to let us know how you’d like your inscription. If you already filled out the survey that we emailed, then you’re good to go — keep an eye on your mailbox and your rewards should arrive soon! 😊

Thanks again for all the support from near and far. We appreciate each and every one of you!

    ❤ Angie and Marcus
